I'm concerned as I just visited the Venezuelan consulate in Medellin and was told that British citizens need visas to Venezuela when going by land. Does anyone know if this is true and if not, did you need to get a Toursit Entry Card beforehand. thanks

Hola dbc05930,

A direct flight from Bogota, Colombia to Caracas would definitely save you a lot of hassle and I know that being a UK citizen you don't need a visa. Nevertheless, if you are on a budget and want to go to Santa Marta, Baranquilla and Caratagen on Colombia's Northeastern coast you can take the bus from anyone of these coastal towns in Colombia across the border, through the town of Maicao and the onto Maracaibo. Just make sure you have all your docs in order and you should have no problems.
Tecnically speaking you do need a visa if entering overland; nevertheless, I know a few people who just showed up at the border with their UK passport and had no problems with entering the country. I even know a fellow who extended his 90 day stay in Venezuela, crossed the border, went to Colombia for a few days and then entered Vzla again without any major hassles. Nevertheless, you may wish to consult with your consulate or embassy. The risk is entirely up to you.

Travel safe,

All the best,

In a similar predicament-I'm Irish travelling with a Dane and neither of us can find the answer to this.we are crossing over from Columbia via land. So as I understand, there is no one who can issue the tourist card to us. I've read lots about people chancing it at the border but it's really not worth it. I'm calling the embassy in London (again) tomorrow. If I get thru, I'll be in touch with info

Spoke to consulate in London today. Any UK or Irish citizen travelling into Venezuela over land needs a tourist visa which you apply for at the consulte, here is their website; www.embavenez-uk.org
hope that helps, have a great trip!

Its amazing how stupid the Venezuelan consulates are!! We have been to 2 (Medallin and Cartagena) and both gave the wrong information.

UPDATE - We just crossed 2 days ago from Colombia to Venezuela. I´m on a British Passport and my wife a Russian one. We did NOT need a tourist card or a visa. This supposed tourist card is just the simple form you fill in when entering most countries. We were stamped in several seconds and passed through with no problems.

Don´t waste your time worrying about this stuff. From our experience it was simple.
