Hello travellers

I've been reading some conflicting information re crossing to Venezuela from Cúcuta.

  1. Is it true that the border is closed on weekends?

  2. And also, I've read that you can only get tourist cards for Venezuela if you fly into the country. If you're entering overland, do you need to organise a tourist visa in advance (I'm a NZ citizen wanting to stay in Venezuela for up to 2 weeks)? If so, is it possible to do this in Colombia (or Quito, where I'm living at the moment?)

Cheers for any help you can give me.

Hi friend,
I saw your question and i will like to help you ok. crossing into venezuela with a different nationality you need a visa and the type of visa will depend on your porpose ok. To study you need a student visa, To work you need a working permit o resident permit,to stay as you said you need a resident permit but that can not be given to you at once ok. You have to enter first as a tourist o student o worker after five years legally you will authomatically have resident permit that is five years renewable ok. i live and work in venezuela i can apply for your visa at the capital city caracas ok. living illegal is a very bad pratice. you can contact me through my email- francbiya@hotmail.com for more information.

Hi

I crossed at Maicao in northern Colombia. I imagine things would be much the same:

  1. I think it highly unlikely that they would close down the border crossing on weekends. Maicao was open 7 days very early until late at night (it may have even been 24 hours).

  2. I am an Australian citizen and my travel agent told me I needed a visa to enter Venezuela overland, so I went to the hassle and expense of getting one. Then, at the border crossing, the guard didnt even bother to check the visa, he just glanced at the first page of my passport and stamped it! So much for that. When flying out of Caracas they also don't require a visa (although keep about 130 BsF handy to pay the exit fee).

Hello Mooncakes,

I believe the border control is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Lot of trade, legal and illegal, goes through this route so I would find it hard to believe that they would close for the weekend. According to this following government website, you don't need a visa to enter Vzla.
http://www.mre.gov.ve/metadot/index.pl?id=2871;isa=Category;op=show

You might just want to check up on that with the Venezuelan consulate in NZ before venturing out to Vzla.

Travel safe!

All the best,

Thomas

Hi everyone

Thanks for your responses. Just rang the Venezuelan consulate here in Quito today and found out we don't need visas - hooray! They couldn't give us info about whether the border is open 7 days, but I think it would be a little crazy for them to be closed on weekends.

Venezuela, here we come.
