Hola,

I will be travelling to Venezuala with my parents (in their late 50s) in July and m currently trying to arrange an itinerary. Apologies in advance if this has been answered continuously but I have been reading through old posts and only seem to read about safety concerns!

We have 11 days to get from Caracas to Cartagena. There is nothing specific we have to see (unfortunately due to the time restraints we will not make it to Angel Falls), just get a mix of different highlights. Things I like the like the idea of are Merida (with a trip into Los Llanos which will take out a few days), Coro, small coastal towns, and Santa Marta in Columbia.

I know all of that is a bit ambitious, but if anyone has any suggestions or advice about which way to go or what to leave out it would be much appreciated.

By the way in terms of background, I am a 30 year old Australian who will (hopefully) have an intermediate level of Spanish as I will have been travelling around South and Central America for the 5 months leading up to this.

Many thanks, Mel

we did the same piece, but 11days is not much, maybe this helps, there are night busses from merida to coro.
we travelled from coro to santa marta in 1 day, but you'll have to leave (very) early in the morning in coro and take a collectivo taxi from maracaibo to the border, there we bussed on to santa marta (arrived when it was dark).
its a bit speedy but could be fun, don't forget earplugs to get some sleep on the night busses
