Hello Thorn Treeers,

Headed to Caracas this tuesday ( I know, I know, but I decided and bought the ticket last night). I've been finding good prices for air tickets for domestic flights online. But I can't buy them with my credit card as the price will skyrocket with the official exchange rate. So I'm planning to buy them in cash once in Caracas. Question is: Can I expect the same prices that I find online or will they be more expensive at the counter or have a poor-spanish-speaker fee?

Does anyone know the current rate travelers been getting for their dollar? Latest I found was 5.8-6.3. Is that still so?

Thanks!

nty

You're talking about the black market rate, which from what I was told yesterday was Blvs 6,600 to 1USD. As you well know the official rate is about Blvs 2,150 to 1USD. I am headed for Maracaibo today, and that's what I was told by some friends yesterday when I talked to them on the phone. And you're right, if you pay with your credit card you'll get the official rate of exchange. That sucks because I have to carry lots of cash which is making me very unconfortable from a security point of view. You may also want to try a travel agency in Caracas to buy your plane tickets though. And there you could probably negotiate or getter a better deal paying with your credit card.
