Hi there,

I wonder if anyone might be able to help, me and my girlfriend are about to buy tickets to Venezuela for this August, and I just wanted to check what sort of rough daily budget we can expect?

We have just over 3 weeks, will be staying in low end digs, camping some of the time, spending bit of time on the coast, and also hopefully some time hiking in the Andes and bit of jungle trekking.

Any daily budget estimates would be greatly appreciated, as we are both medical students, so money is very tight!

Many thanks in advance!

Sam

Sam,
Prices vary quite a bit in the capital, but I'll try to outline some from the top of my head:

Cheap hotel room (Caracas: BsF 200, rest: BsF: 150) (You can always find cheaper but on your own risk!)
A sitted meal without alcohol per person, around BsF 150
Cheap street meal per person: Around BsF50
An alcoholic drink: around BsF50, a beer: BsF 10
If you're going to cook, there are budget markets with really cheap groceries
Buses would be from BsF20 (an hour) to BsF 200 (7-8 hours), taxis are expensive.
Save BsF 200 for the airport exit tax.
If you're going to camp, make sure there are more campers, preferably locals and any authorities nearby.
And dont even think about using your cards here (even for ATMs) or your trip will be twice as expensive. You need to bring cash.
Hope it helps,
Safe journeys

Hola Sam,

As Wilcho pointed out, Caracas can be quite pricey. Places on the coast tend to be cheaper. There are some budget places in Choroni in the Henri Pittier National Park, Morrocoy and in Mochima. You can get a decent room in downtown Merida (Venezuelan Andes) for about US $ 10 a night per person. As for a jungle experience there are some budget camps in the Orinoco Delta.

Travel safe,

All the best,

Thomas
