Hi

Me and my girlfriend are planning on backpacking around Venezuela in August for 1 month. Does anyone have any recommendations about places to go/avoid? We want to see a bit of everything including the beautiful beaches (if there are any?) for diving etc, mountains, desert, amazon etc.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Are you white looking? If so avoid all marginal areas stick to the main roads. Absolutely avoid shanty towns around caracas at all costs. Look like the locals always look busy with a purpose don't look lost or like a tourist. If you get mugged do not resist. Venezuela is not the best country to be backpacking around and especially with a female. Do not make yourself a target by walking in desolate areas venezuelans avoid living in the woods for a reason.

thanks but that doesn't really help.... I was hoping for more useful information such as places to go, and if I could easily find cheap (10$) guest houses

Hello Agalardi,

Defnitely you should get to the Angel Falls to visit the highest waterfall in the world, located in th emiddle o the jungle in the Venezuelan state of Bolivar. You may also want to head out to Merida where you should be able to find accomodation for US $ 10 a night per person. Merida is located in the Vzlan Andes, it is a student town which offers many activities for locals and foreigners alike. As for beaches you may want to check out the Costal town of Choroni/Puerto Colombia in the Henri Pittier National Park, a great place to enjoy the cloudforest and some amazing beaches. As for diving you might want to consider Los Roques, an archipelago approximately a 45 min offshore from Caracas. Great beaches, some of the best the Caribbean has to offer, amzing snorkeling and scuba diving.

Hope you find this info useful. If you need more info/ help just let me know.

Travel safe!

All the best,

Thomas

thanks for the reply, i only just saw it... the trip has been postponed to this summer though so the information is still useful. Is the weather okay in July though or is it very wet? Also, I heard that it isn't a very safe country, is this the case or an exageration?

Thank you for your help
