Hi everyone,

My partner and I are going to South America early next year. I've been tossing up whether to do Patagonia or not. We are trying to go without plans, but I've been reading that you can't visit Patagonia in the high season without prior bookings. Most likely we'd make our way there in early February. Are booking essential?

Thanks!

You need prior bookings for Torres del Paine.
And at many places it will be difficult to find good rooms or any room at all without a booking, on the other hand you can camp.

In Torres del Paine, if you plan to do the W or O Circuit then campsites and refugio beds need to be booked in advanced during high season (dec to feb). It's been like this for a few years now. It still may be possible to do it last minute, but it'll be difficult.

El Chalten is a lot easier as the campsite is free with no pre-booking necessary. Plus plenty of hostels/hotels for accom. Its much easier to wing it there than in TDP.

That said, most other places in Patagonia are pretty easy to wing it as they are not as popular as TDP.
