Villa OHiggins to El Chalten in winterCountry forums / South America / Chile
Is it possible to make the trip from Villa OHiggins to El Chalten in June/July?
Possible, yes. People live in those villages year round ... | 1
the pass is open all year, but the boat crossing Lake Ohiggins only operates from November to April, the use of the boat is unavoidable. there is a governmental boat attending local settlers but with a schedule more sparsed and suited only for settlers demands | 2
It´s possible by road (buses hop over to Argentina, where the weather´s relatively kinder), and theoretically not that hard, because many local go to Coyhaique to stock up (and you should, too) but be prepared for serious delays, from landslides to rain so heavy the road can´t be navigated when it´s dark (which is something like 5 pm to 8 am), to frozen roads. It´s just stuff that happens here, so people do their thing anyway, but nothing is fast. | 3
