Traveling to Iquitos alone & arriving at night

I am an 18 year old female and in April I am traveling alone to Iquitos, Peru. My flight gets into Iquitos at just before 10pm at night. I have booked myself a bed at the Flying Dog hostel but my huge concern is about getting there... As I will be alone at night I feel very nervous. If anyone could help me in which way would be the safest to get from Iquitos airport to the flying dog hostel that would be much appreciated as I know nothing about taxis or transport and the safety in Peru. Thank you!

I assume you arrive on a larger plane with more passengers. A good tactic is to talk to other people when waiting for the bags, and see if someone wants to share a taxi. Another tactic would be, asking the hostel if they do pick up guests from the airport, or can advise on a reliable taxi company.

I am not female, but I usually use one of the following tactics:
- When in the airport ask someone official where to find a trustworthy taxi.
- If you have to choose a taxi yourself, choose one YOURSELF, don't let someone push you into taking their taxi. Trust your instinct. Chose a very old man or a face that seems trustworthy.
- Take note of the license plate and send the license plate in a text message to a friend.
- Ask your hostel to pick you up.
- Study the map so you know where they should take you.
- Should things go wrong: Be ready to stay calm, be assertive and if necessary defend yourself.

But relax... 99% chance everything will go smoothly anyway.
My aunt, who has travelled alone her whole life, would advice you to dress conservatively. Although I fully agree that everyone should be totally free to wear whatever they want, sometimes I do worry when I see young beautiful girls traveling alone with barely any clothes on (mini shirts, revealing tops, etc. ...). This is not only for your safety but also for the fact that in some cultures it is not that appreciated to dress to sexy and might hinder you in your contacts with people.
