São Paulo - Accomodations and Ilhabela

Country forums / South America / Brazil

I'm going to be in São Paulo for one night at the beginning of July (mid-week). I'm hoping to get a recommendation for a hotel in the $60-80 range that is well located for any must see attractions or at least to some decent dining and drinking options.

Also, we had planned on ending our trip with a few days on Ilha Grande before flying out of Rio, but one of the guidebooks made it sound as though the Paulista Coast (specifically Ilhabela) might be the more attractive option. Mostly looking for scenic and peaceful surroundings as it's probably not going to be great weather for swimming in late July. Does anyone have an opinion on which is the best bet?

Though I haven't stayed there, there is an IBIS Hotel in Av Paulista (Ibis Sao Paulo Paulista). Usually a good deal. A member of the Mercure group.
I would go for Isla Grande over Ilhabela.

If you need something a little cheaper than the IBIS the Formula 1 is about 100m walk away on Consalacao. Rates are pretty much in the middle of the range you quoted. FYI The airport bus stops outside the front of the IBIS.

I think the best deal is Formule 1 (www.formule1.com.br).
Both Ilhabela and Ilha Grande are nice. So choosing it will depend on your interests.
Ilha Grande is more secluded (no cars in it). You can always trek to a isolated beach and party at night.
Ilhabela is more upscale, with excellent hotels and restaurants, but it also offers great treks and secluded beaches. And there are not so many backpackers as you will find in Ilha Grande (if it's either positive or negative, it's up to you).
Anyway, whatever you choose, it'll be pretty nice!

I agree with Cassiobrazil, both islands are very nice. Ilha Grande has a wonderful sea to do some snorkeling and diving, just a small village eand a quiet atmosphere whereas ilha Bela is more suitable for trekking, visiting falls, is bigger and there a car would be very useful. In Ilhabela there is a very bad and disturbing mosquito called Borachudo. Apart from this is fine even if a bit more expensive. Ask for weather during that period, if its raining its better you visit the litorla the goes from sao Paulo til the south part of Rio state, really amazing
Good Luck
Flavio

Thanks again everyone for all the advice. Leaning towards Ilha Grande at this point as I don't really want to deal with having to rent a car. We'll just see how the weather goes though.
