santiago, punta arenas accomodation

can anyone suggest a comfortable one night stay in a quiet, safe neighbourhood hostal or b&b near food places in both santiago & punta arenas for a single woman travellor. clean & warm. under US $50. thanks

For Santiago, there is a place called Casa Condell which is small (7 rooms, I think) run by a mother and son. He works in the state tourism office and is a mine of information. Shared bathroom but very clean and it is in an area full of restaurants.
Punta Arenas tends to have very expensive hotels or mediocre hostals. Have a look at Chalet Chapital Hotel. Despite the weird name, it is a nice little hotel. A double is about 75, so you might get a single in your budget.

Santiago - Hotel Vegas on 49 Londres in Barrio Paris Londres, right across the main road (O'Higgin) is the perdestrian malls. I was travelling alone too. Rate for single is USD38 and matrimonial (queen size bed) for USD46. I love the location, felt totally safe and it was so convenient!

Agree with Ostow. Nice and safe area, right in the city centre. Hotel Londres is ok, as well is Hotel Lucy, right next door.

Punta Arenas: Hostal del Sur, very good value, very friendly people

There should be several ladies meeting the arriving buses at the bus station in Punta Arenas who have rooms to rent for the night (bed and breakfast places). There are tons of bed and breakfast places in Punta Arenas. Rates vary by the season. High season is December to early March. In late March the going rate is about U.S. $ 10 per night, with breakfast.
