Salta to San Pedro

Looking for info on driving from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama. I understand there is a fee for crossing and car rentals must give you permission. Anyone done this drive?

I haven't driven this, but I did do it on a bus. I'm not sure how you could drive this. About half the drive was across salt flats, so I'm not sure how you'd navigate. The border is in the middle of no where with no roads. Make sure to have a good map.

I live in Salta at the moment.
there are two options for you toGet to San Pedro, two passes, the easiest is Jama which nowdays is all tar.
The other, Sico, is mostly gravel.
There are busses running to SP from Salta.
I, myself and 5 more are going the 9th of July.
