Rio in September-questions

Country forums / South America / Brazil

Hi everyone,
After weeks of scheduling and changing plans for a trip to S America, I’m finally considering Rio as one of the possible destinations (hope so).
For that matter I would like to ask you a few questions:
a) We hope to be in Rio for the week 14-21 September what will be the weather (I’ve read on TA that in September –spring-the temperatures are mild and not too much rain) and the water like, can we hope to swim a couple of days? (I’ve read some previous posts but I didn’t find a specific answer regarding the water itself for that period of the year).
b) Is there any <mosquito> issue in Rio in September? My wife will be 3 months pregnant at that time and I don’t want to expose <them> to no risk.
c) Is there any quiet ,< family oriented beach> , not too far from Rio (maybe a day trip distance)?
Thanks to all of you for reading and maybe answering.
Cheers , Aloort

There is a wonderful family-oriented beach in Niteroi, just across the bay, called Itaipu. You can get there by local bus. Take the 770D from Copacabana. The beach is the very end of the line. It has calm water, tables, chairs and umbrellas on the beach with restaurant/bar service. Also has an historic archeological museum of an early settlement on site. Cute tiny fishing village. A little piece of heaven -- with a fantastic view across the bay of Rio, Copacabana Beach, Corcovado, etc. Outstanding sunset viewing. All within less than an hour on the bus. It is our favorite spot.

I have not been for a while, but beaches around Barra de Tijuca used to be quite nice. If you have a car, beaches south of there are even nicer. Malaria is not an issue in Rio (it is in some other areas), but dengue may be. Need to cover up and use repellent.

a) Yes, you can swim in late Sept, there is high probability of sunny days. No problem with water temperature at all.

b) Mosquitos are not an issue in Rio, sauf dengue epidemies in high Summer season. There will be no need of insect repellent.

c) Sorry, I do not understand what you mean with "family-oriented beach". Families in Rio bath in all of them.
