| ormey200008:25 UTC02 Nov 2007 | Hi
You may think that reading this may be bad form, but it is just a warning that the secret garden in quito the one that comes highly recommended in the lonely planet. Is a bit pants.room OK, great location for the old town.
But I am now writing this with the music blaring out full blast and I have no chance to go to sleep. It has been like this for the last three days and shows no sign of changing. it goes on till a 11 and with jet lag it is not a good place to stay, or it you have to get up at any early time in the morning.
If you want to get pissed and stay up then great, if you want to sleep then NO....
you have been warned

you have been advised (to get a good night's sleep)

| ormey200018:20 UTC02 Nov 2007 | Hi yes
Good underlining by the way.
The above is not correct I have ear plugs and yes I use them, the music is so LOUD yes Loud that ear plugs are not good enough to block out the bass.

| nosaj23:02 UTC02 Nov 2007 | Why did you not sleep somewhere else after the first night? You can't seriously say that you are annoyed about the noise or that you did not expect it. Everyone knows that hostels are loud and meant for partying. Check into a budget hotel if you want to sleep.

| kages23:33 UTC04 Nov 2007 | I had the same problem when I stayed there. It is a great party hostel but I think it is over priced for what you get (No sleep). If you are looking for something more relaxed and cheaper (at least it was when I stayed there!) try Chicago Hostel just around the corner on Los Rios. I stayed there on and off for a couple of months and really do recommend it. It was $7.50 for a single room with a bathroom/shower. The staff are nice, and there is a kitchen. If you are looking for quiet maybe ask for a room on a higher floor or in the building next door. But all in all it was the cheapest, cleanest and nicest hostel I found in Quito. Good Luck

Why not do a homestay through the Secret Garden as they do organise this and immerse yourself with the local culture and make great friends for life. Plus you'll get some sleep if that's what you need.

| ria10:47 UTC07 Nov 2007 | We loved "Posada del maple" - it's on a quiet but short street, close to tram & a nice part of La Mariscal. At the time I went I had no interest at all to stay in the old town.
Dark, lots of drunks & dead at night...there were worse areas but still...
Same thing - I woudn't stay in the old town of Cuenca again...

I stayed at the Secret Garden for one night and soon moved on the next day. Its an amazing hostel and has a really cool view from its patio BUT it was a party hostel and very noisy (even with ear plugs!) I checked out Chicago around the corner but ended up staying at Hostel Revolution. This is located only a few blocks away and is owned by a really cool Ozy guy. It still had a busy hostel feeling to it but was not so over crowded and noisy.
Its up to each person to find what suits them and the Secret Garden is not for me (and some other people here).....Not that there is anything wrong with it....Each to their own!
