Partners to climb up Cotopaxi beginning of 2015Country forums / South America / Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands
Hi! | ||
You need a guide to climb all peaks higher than 5000 metres and you can maximum go two climbers with each guide. I would rather pay more to go alone with a guide, than go together with someone I don't know. If one of you can't make it to the summit you must both turn around. I was really lucky with the weather when I climbed Cotopaxi. It was fantastic! http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/3fbdb/8c7/ | 1
Hi Pepeleches, | 2 | |
Thanks Snowflakes, good advise. Sounds like a party of 4 would be ideal.... Hi Carsten, lets definitely talk more and see. Gracias amigos | 3
The same year I climbed Cotopaxi (2011) I met people who had climbed IIiniza Norte and at that time there had been snow and they used crampons. However, the last years I have visited Ecuador there seem to be practically no snow on Iliniza Norte. I'm sorry, but I don't know how the situation is there now and if you need a guide or if it is okay to go alone (it is over 5000m). It was after an accident on iliniza Sur, I think it was in 2012, that guides became mandatory for higher peaks. | 4
Hello snowflakes100, | 5
Hello speichenede, I did the Cotopaxi climb with Tovar Expeditions in Latacunga, but I don’t know if they do climbs anymore, because when I was there in 2012 they had left their office and were now housed in Hostal Tiana. For Cayambe I used Julio Verne in Riobamba. I know that is far from Cayambe, but I was supposed to climb Chimborazo with them too. Before climbing Cotopaxi I had been hiking in the Quilotoa area for a week and to acclimatize this year I stayed at several places on high altitude; Secret Garden Cotopaxi (3500m), Hacienda Los Mortiños (3600m) and Posada La Estacion in Urbina (3600m). I have written many tips/reviews about some of those places. You can read them for more information. Speichenede, I understand you are interested in hiking too. An easy hike, and good for acclimatization is the hike from Crus Loma above Quito to the summit of Rucu Pichincha. Near Quito you can also hike in Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pasochoa to the summit of Pasochoa. Well, I didn’t find the path to the summit when I was there in 2013, but this year I went to the summit of Pasochoa (from another side) with a group, when I stayed at Secret Garden Cotopaxi. Information about my hikes on Rucu Pichincha and in Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pasochoa: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/3fbdb/8c6/ I have visited The Quilotoa area both in 2011 and 2012 and done many hikes independently between the villages. Both times I started in Isinlivi to hike to higher altitude. I have described the hikes in these pages: | 7
