Parties and Hostels in Fortaleza

Country forums / South America / Brazil

Hi folks
I'll be in Fortaleza in July and I'm looking for some tips on what to do. Guide books have info, but you guys know the truth!!!
Então- Will I have any problem getting hostels when I arrive, or should I plan ahead a bit, as July is in the middle of the northern hemisphere summer break??
-What are some must see places/ beaches in and around Fortaleza? I'm only spending about a week there, so I have to stay fairly close to the city.
-I speak portuguese; I'd like to get off the beaten path a bit wherever I can. I've already done the gringo trail. :-)
-I like to party. Alot. Where can I find good Brazilian music and a strong caipirinha??
-All these questions go for Salvador as well. I'll be there for a week too!
Thanks for any suggestions!!

June is high tourism season in Brazil. Not sure about July I am not familiar with the hostels but have seen several. You could probably book when you arrive but without a car you will likely want to concentrate in one area (e.g., Praia de Iracema, where I have seen at least a couple of places calling themselves hostels of Hosteling Internatl-- do not know if that is for real). Some inexpensive hotels, as well. If you make advance inquiries, ask where the place is located. The fact that praia is in the name does not mean the place is anywhere near the beach (praia). Praia de Iracema (including area around Dragao do Mar) has lots of clubs (I have not been inside; a bit beyond that age-wise), and is also an area of prostitution and drugs, but if you keep your senses you can be just fine. Pirata is a famous club open ony on Monday nights. There are many other places for shows, including the Mucuripe club (no longer in Mucuripe). Praia do Futuro is the best nearby beach and also the place to go on Thursday nights for crabs (the kind you eat). Again, need to keep your eyes open regarding safety. Regarding the many excellent beaches further afield, including but not limited to the famous Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada, a guide book is a good bet. For cooler temps, you can take a bus to Guaramiranga in the mountains about 3 hours away (by bus). Ypioca cachaça runs a large cachaça museum outside of Fortaleza but not sure if you can get there except by car. Look for a Web site.
