Manaus - where to get dollars?

Hi guys,

I will be arriving into Manaus in a few days and I need to get hold of lots of US dollars to pay for trips. Does anybody know where I can buy dollars with my card? Or will I have to withdraw reals and change them?

I can't obtain dollars before I come or travellers cheques - just use my cards. Thanks

Why would you need dollars in Manaus?

IIRC there is a cambio at the airport, there usually is at most international airports and there will be others in town. You will of course be changing currencies twice if you have a foreign bank account so prepare to bleed in terms of transaction fees.

I need dollars to pay for a trip that starts in Manaus but is not run by a Brazil based company. They will only accept dollars as the trip encompasses 4 countries.

I was hoping to avoid the double change scenario if anybody knew of a way to just buy the dollars but looks like I'll have to do the double conversion.

If you have someone back home who can wire money to Western Union for you, you might be able to get dollars in that way: their website indicates that foreigners can receive money in dollars. However, it is also going to depend on whether the western union office you go to collect actually has any dollars. So before you wire money in this manner, head over to a Western Union office in Manaus and ask them.
