Lima to Quito by bus?

Country forums / South America / Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands

We are currently in Cuzco heading to Lima shortly. We need to get to Quito for our return flight (plus wanting to spend a week or 10 days in the area surrounding Quito). The question is how to get there?

The cheapest flight I can find from Lima to Quito is on Tame at US$230 per person, one way. That seems pretty high so if we can get there by bus, we'd prefer that option, but the only routing I can find, using a decent bus service (Cruz del Sur) is only to Guayaquil. it arrives at 1am which I really don't want to be changing buses or finding a hotel room in the middle of the night.

Does anyone have any better suggestions? Maybe a way to break it up a bit and do part by bus and part flying?

Thanks,
Tonya

An option you may research is to fly from Lima to Piura (Peruvian airlines or whatever airline is the cheapest on your travel date) and continue overland (changing buses in Guayaquil).

I second #1's suggestion to fly to Piura and bus it from there. If you're interested, you can also bus from Piura to Loja, then continue up to Quito by way of Cuenca.

2

230 USD for an international flight in South America is a bargain (if you ask me).

#3, yeah I agree. Especially when you consider all you'd be saving on lodging if you tried to blow straight through on buses rather than spend any time poking around.

You don't need to go to Guayaquil. If you take a bus to Tumbes then cross the border, there will be direct busses to Quito on the Ecuador side.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. When I add up the costs and hassle, we will probably just suck up the cost for airfare.

I've been on price alerts for this flight and they have just gone down to between £72 and £96. If you risk buying them once there they may be even less. have a good trip!
