This is only a part of my full itinerary which can be found here http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/message.jspa?messageID=17495579#17495579
I'm re-posting to try to get some responses.
We'll be landing in BsAs on 7 Sept, a friend of mine is going to be in Rio, staying with her family over the Xmas/NYE period and has invited us to stay with her for NYE.
Our original itinerary would have us in Rio by late October, far too early to be waiting around until the end of December me thinks. So we've effectively got just under 4 months to kill between Buenos Aires and Rio. So here is what we've decided on:
Buenos Aires + day trips around for about a week
Uruguay, then back to BsAs
Iguazu Falls, we will probably stay a night or two here
An option is to go through Paraguay and move towards Asuncion, (then cross back to Arg and go towards Salta) but we will have to sort out visas. Is there a Paraguayan consulate close to Iguazu, or would we need to sort this out in BsAs?
Our other option is to stay in Argentina and bus back towards Salta that way.
From Salta we'll cross into Northern Chile and visit Pedro de Atacama.
Is it possible to go from Chile to Bolivia? Or would it make more sense to go from Salta to Bolivia, then to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile?
Then we'll go to Peru, and probably spend a month here doing all the usual stuff. Namely Ica/Huacachina, Cuzco, Lima, Machu Picchu, Iquitos.
From Iquitos take a boat down the Amazon to Belem, stopping at Manaus for a day or two and Santarem for another day or two.
WE've heard Belem is quite nice so we'll do a couple of days there too.
For North and N. East Brazil, we want to go to Sao Luis, Maranhao and the surrounding area, and Salvador, Bahia.
From Salvador we will fly to Rio and meet up with our friend.
Do you think this is doable in under 4 months without being rushed?
One of our high priorities in Brazil is to see Lencois Maranhenses, I've heard it may be completely dry in December which would be a huge disappointment. Can anyone comment on this?
In the weeks leading up to Xmas and NYE, should we expect that places like Salvador, Belem, Sao Luis and other main attractions in Maranhao and Bahia would be very difficult to find accommodation, busses and planes, and prices to be quite inflated? Or is it not as bad away from Rio.
once we are in Rio, after NYE we will probably check out Ilha Grande and Parati, should we expect any difficulty in finding accommodation (1st week of January)?
Any advice would be great. Thanks
Thanks.
