The following is a question I received via private message:

"I have an unlocked GSM phone that I bought in italy. I am assuming it will not work in Argentina. Will it?"

If you have a two-band unlocked GSM cellphone from the United States or Canada it will work in all American countries except Brazil and Venezuela. If you have a two-band unlocked GSM cellphone from Europe or Australia it will work only in Brazil and Venezuela. Quad-band unlocked GSM cellphones work all over the world. In Argentina the CTI SIM card costs 3.40 US$, the Personal SIM card costs 2.25 US$ and the Movistar SIM card costs 3.90 US$. Two-band phones with the pre-paid system cost 30.00 US$. Local calls cost 0.23 US$ per minute. International calls cost about 0.80 US$ per minute.

Places where you can buy phones and/or SIM cards:

Movistar.
645 Corrientes Avenue.

CTI.
902 Florida Street (Florida and Paraguay).
1720 Corrientes Avenue.
541 Peron Street.

Personal.
1037 Callao Avenue.
566 Corrientes Avenue.
1098 Reconquista Street.

To the poster who has asked this question, please, send me your phone trade mark and model to be able to tell you if it works here.

I bougth mine in italy. when they sell it to me, I asked one that will eventually work in Argentina, and they selled it like "tri-band" or "tri-norma" (like they call it there).
It worked perfectly here. Brand: Motorola, model, c650

I have use it in Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Italy, Spain, Norway and Sweden. My guess is that it works almost for everywhere (had to unlock it first though)

Tri-band phones from Europe, Australia, Brazil and Venezuela lack the 850 Mhz band needed in the 23 Argentine provinces.
