Food for the salkantay trek

Country forums / South America / Peru

Hey everybody, I'm currently in Cuzco and I plan on doing the salkantay trek solo. From what I have read one can refill on water on the way up. Is the the same with food or should I pack up enough for the whole trek? Thank you

There are kiosks selling snacks (chocolate bars, chips, Gatorade etc.) along the route (prices are a little high for Peru but not crazy). At most of the campsites the family running it will be happy to let you eat dinner with them for a few dollars. The cooks for tour groups offered me hot water a few times too. I've heard that the tour group cooks may sell you lunch/dinner on the side too, but can't confirm this. The exception is if you do the route up to llactapampa where there is no food available - there is a restaurant but looked like it hadn't opened in a long time. I didn't think llactapampa was really worth it, swarming in sand flies and MP is just a little dot in the distance.
