Ferry to Uruguay

Country forums / South America / Argentina

Hi,

I want to go from Buenos Aires to Colonia and then back from Montevideo. Pretty ordinary trip, but the dates are 4th January and 7th January respectively.

So the question, is it considered a high season for such a trip and there could be no tickets right in the port? (or only expensive ones)

Should I buy tickets in advance?

Thanks.

If you take the Buquebus large ferry, there will always be tickets. Sometimes the smaller catamarans sell out in advance. I would buy tickets in person from the Buquebus office downtown before you go.

I wouldn't say always. I lived in Colonia 2 years and did many trips. Twice I tried to buy Buquebus tickets 1.5 hours before sailing and couldn't.

What I am trying to find out is whether my dates is a high season and influx of Argentines and tourists to Uruguay is expected? What make me feel a bit nervous is that Buenos Aires hotels are heavily booked for these days

It's not particularly high season, especially during the week, maybe with more tourists, etc. Since it really doesn't cost more, buy your ticket in advance if your travel dates aren't flexible.
