Cuenca Restaurant Recommendation

Country forums / South America / Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands

After three weeks in Ecuador and having grown jaded by the regular set meals, we have been trying some slightly more expensive restaurants (i.e. about $5 - 10 for a dinner). As a result of eating in a half dozen such restaurants, I have a recommendation for a very nice place in Cuenca: Café Austria.

The owner, Frank, is a German man who recently moved the place so some of the guide books have the wrong address. It is now on the corner of Simon Bolivar and Hermano Miguel – in the main tourist area (parques and cathedrals) -- and it is well worth finding if you are looking for some place clean and spacious with excellent food, friendly service, and a nice low-key jazzy ambience.

Thank you, north_boy. I'll be in Cuenca in April and appreciate the culinary advice!

Cafe Austria fortunately has closed. The food there was either really bad or just plain blah. I don't know what kind of restaurant you're looking for, but let me know and I'll give you some recommendations.

Hi, jk:

You must have misunderstood my post. I was actually recommending the food at the Cafe Austria. I have to admit I am contrasting it with the typical Ecuadorian "set meal," but I quite enjoyed the food at Cafe Austria: nicely prepared, nicely presented.

I might be biased, too, because I enjoyed the ambience of the place. I am sorry to hear it has closed -- is it possible you were looking at the old location rather than the new location?
