Went to Costa Rica last July and LOVED it. Hubs and I flew into San Jose, rented a car (now that's an experience!) and drove through Braulio Carillo Parque to Siquirres. Next morning rode horses for 4 hours or so, GORGEOUS views, then drove to Limon, then to Puerto Viejo. Stayed at a lovely place called Banana Azul. Hung out at the beach for a while, did some exploring. Our next adventure was driving to the Pacific coast taking the Cerro de la Muerte (GORGEOUS!) to San Isidro General, only got off track a touch, fun nonetheless, and on to Playa Baru, Uvita, Ojochal, and again up to Jaco, then back to San Jose for our flight back. Not once did we have any 'problems' or bad experiences. We stayed at B&B's, some nicer than others but ALL were clean. Nothing taken from our rooms or luggage. But then again we are smart travelers. Ticos are beautiful people, ready to help, patient with my pitiful Spanish, and several times we were not charged "gringo tax" at the sodas and simple restaurants we went to, which by the way, the food was pretty tasty!
The Caribbean coast seemed to be more laid back, also more "bars" and places to hang out. Cahuita is a small surfing 'hole in the wall' type town that has a nice hippy vibe. It's just north of Puerto Viejo.
We are heading to Ecuador this summer. Will post on our experiences!
Enjoy!
