Chile with a 5 yo for two monthsCountry forums / South America / Chile
Hi there... I'm looking to spend December and January in Peru or Chile. Years ago I did RTW trips but haven't done major travel abroad with my son. We are used to a remote ranch lifestyle and living simply... He's used to 1400 mile road trips with animals entoy and nomadic winters... My goal for heading to SA was to do a full immersion experience for the language, cultural diversity, an "authentic" exposure to the locals(i.e. Away from tourist hot spots) and pique his love of adventure while traveling. So more rural locations, less modern conveniences, etc and of course amazing nature is the priority.
Yes, in Chile, go for Southern Chile but avoid the very touristy extreme South (Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine), check out the Lake District or some more remote places (like Palena, for instance) in the Carretera Austral area. It is a rainy region, however. There are lots of ranches and horses around. | 1
Thank you for the suggestions. I will research more in the Lake District area as perhaps a starting point and then branching out... It looks like LAN has semi reasonable prices flying from LAX into Puerto Montt. | 2
There are many nightbusses between Santiago and all towns in the Lake District. | 3
In the Lake District, some places like Puerto Varas and Pucon are very touristy, but other lakes, Rupanco for instance, are surrounded by tiny rural communities only. | 4
