Camera Replacement in Peru

Country forums / South America / Peru

Hi all.

my camera took a few knocks and the water from Gocta finished it off. (be careful getting too close all you amateurs!)

I need a replacement. I am in Chachapoyas.

high street is one option.

years back someone turned me on to this when I needed to replace a camera in Argentina

http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar/

I got a great deal.

does anyone have any advice on how best to get a bargain for a new camera, online or otherwise - I am looking for something similar to a small Canon Proshot. nothing crazy.

thanks!

The larger cities on the coast, all have shopping malls. That would be the most straightforward way to look for a new camera of the commmon brands. Even in Chachapoyas there should be some shop selling cheap electronics. Maybe near the market. Or ask for advice at your hotel.
If you want advice on more specialized shops, maybe give a hint what are the next stops on your travel route.
Online shopping is not a good option. Getting things mailed to you is nearly impossible while you travel, and most of the prospective sellers would be located in Lima.

thank you for the advice!

my initial plan to go to an electronics store here is the one I will go with. my journey takes me farther north west so less options.

that site put you directly in touch with the seller, I met with him and exchanged. doubtful one exists here, thought I would ask.
agreed, buying online would be a frustrating process for sure. will avoid.

an update for any unfortunate who finds themselves in this position....

picked up a small Canon Powershot in a photo store on the main plaza (beside Fusion Cafe), the kind of store people have portraits / passport shots taken in.

cost me approx £120 - and it will get the job done for the remainder of the trip.
