Arriving at Caracas airport at 11 at night

Country forums / South America / Venezuela

I read the U.S. travel warnings about Venezuela and it is quite alarming. It says that travel on the road from the airport to Caracas is highly dangerous and no cab drivers at the airport can be trusted. Does anyone think it is a really bad idea to arrive at the airport that late?

Well, I never like arring late at a country wich is new to me, especially in Venezuela. But, if you take some precautions you should be fine.

First, withdraw some cash from a ATM in the airport (but not much, because you get a lousy rate from ATMs.. but I don't think it's wise to exchange dollars in the blackmarket so late at night.. but if you do it, be careful, because the people exchanging money at the airport should not be trusted at all!)

Book a hotel in the city, so you don't have to go looking for a place to stay or risk showing up at night on a full up hotel. You may as well try to arrange a taxi to pick you up in the airport.. your hotel might help you out... it would be the best idea, as the hotels must know some taxi companies that are trustworthy.

You can also get the telephone of some taxi companies in Caracas and call them once you arrive in the country..

Hello

You could arrange a bed close to the airport and then, then travel onto caracas and wherever the following day at your lesure. Also most of the hotels do airport transfers ,
I can recommend the hotel catimar ( www.hotelcatimar.com) which i found more than adequate, its only about a ten minute ride, it also has a decent restaurant and bar.....
also the hotels transfer drivers done money changing at reasonable rates.

I always arrive to the Airport at night. It is much better when there is no traffic - 25 minutes to downtown. Just hire a car company and driver. They will wait for you at the airport with a sign. You can have the hotel send a driver for you also.

No worries arriving at Night, I met a great Driver Pedro from Chacao in Caracas and he will do an Airport pickup at most times.

His charge is 120 Bvf to the city, he is safe and a very carefull driver RARE FOR CARACAS !!! however he is in his 60s.

Alternatively try the services of Luisa a tour guide and promoter who will arrange everythying for you including Exchange $ or Euro so you bypass the crazyness at the Airport. and believe me it is CRAZY.

If you want more information E me at kimbatu@hotmail.com

Have a safe Trip
