Ambato to Banos by bus

Country forums / South America / Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands

Quick question to anyone who lives in the Ambato/Banos region. I will be arriving to Ambato by bus and then changing buses to head to Banos. I may be arriving late at night (11pm-12am). I need to know if there are buses that run this late at night. Most of the information I have received online says that buses run frequently until 10pm, but there is no information for after 10pm. Do buses run from Ambato to Banos after 10pm? If so, how frequently? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Just get a hotel in Ambato. The buses for Banos start up really early in the morning. Ambato has nothing to offer tourists at 1am in the morning, but neither does Banos. And the trip takes less than an hour.

Besides the busses Ambato Banos do not leave from the bus station at all, but several kilometers further on. At the bus station, you noly have busses to Puyo Tena that can drop you in Banos.

I have looked into staying in Ambato but lodging doesn't appear to be very reasonably priced. It would make more sense for me to pay for two nights in Banos, but only if I can actually get there. My question is, are there buses that run throughout the night? My second question is for you, @willemspie.....where do the buses heading to Banos pick up? I know I can snag a bus heading to Puyo but there is a chance that they may be sold out if I arrive late at night.

The busses to Banos leave from the MERCADO MAYORISTA. If you're coming from the South (Riobamba, Cuenca) you can be dropped there before arriving at the bus station.

I will be arriving from Esmeraldas/Santo Domingo so it doesn't look like I will be able to be dropped off. I will probably have to snag a taxi. There are buses that leave Quito for Banos pretty late at night, but will they actually pick up passengers at Mercado Mayorista at that hour?

There appear to be three buses coming from Quito to Banos late at night. Two are run by Transporte Banos (departing Quito at 20:05 and 22:45) and one is run by Cooperativa San Francisco (departing Quito at 22:30). Do these buses stop at Mercado Mayorista? Or possibly at their office in Ambato? Or do they continue straight to Banos without stopping.

If you come from Santo Domingo you can also possibly change bus much before Ambato, at the road junction with the road coming from Quito and wait there for a bus to Banos. .
