A nice place to stay as a student.

I am planning a visit to Argentina, after I learn spanish, and when there I would like to study some of the local history, maybe learn Tango, maybe to learn to play guitar in the local style. any suggestions on any of this, finding a clean place to stay until I move on to other places?
I ve heard that most of the good places to stay are way out of the way in BA. is this true?

I also plan to visit Chile, Peru, Venezuela and Rio.

BTW, are Americans hasseled if they visit Venezuela? I am not a Bush supporter and not informed enough on Chavez to have a sound opinion.

my choice would be buenos aires, or salta.

San telmo in BA is probably good for what you want to do. I think you could get a room for around 20 pesos pn. depends on you rbudget really and how long you want to stay there. Or try a home stay with a local family.

ps - americans are not hassled more than other nationalities in venezuela. Mind you, they are not too friendly towards any white foreigner in my opinion.

Most of the best places I stayed at in BA were close to the things I wanted to see or close to the Subte. I don't think there are many hostels that are out of the way.

My two favorite hostels in BA are Sandazas in San Telmo and Girmondo in Palermo (Plaza Italia). Both were great, met lots of people (more partying at Girmondo, more culture at Sandazas).

Re Venezuela: if you feel threatened at all (and that's very unlikely), just claim to be Candian. I've done this before, and I've had no issues. Best to avoid politics wherever you go.

Don't forget to put numerous Maple Leaf patches all over your bags and you will skate through life with nary a problem since everyone will think you're one of the "good guys"!

Whatever you do don't pretend to be a free press supporting university student in Venezuela....
