3-week intinerary step 1- fly to Cusco

Country forums / South America / Peru

So after a fair amount of research, including on this forum, I've determined that we basically just need to fly to Cusco and go from there. Based on prior travel experience, most the at home planning goes out the window when you arrive in country and start talking with fellow travelers, IMO. Sounds like we are safe and better off $-wise arranging a trek there (we intend to do a 4-5-day to and around the rainbow mountain and Ausangate). Same goes for doing a full-day at MP budget style. Maybe we try to arrange an Amazon venture, maybe just stay and really focus on soaking in that region, or plot a course for weaving our way back to Lima. Thoughts, anyone?

Any recommendations on accommodations for both Lima and Cusco? We arrive Lima 5am and not sure if we'll want to catch the Cusco flight that day or chill in Lima. (With multiple daily flights, sounds like that can be booked day of?) Say $20-50/night for room, not party hostel, but cool people to meet and authentic.

Thanks a bunch!

Some tips...
- Take into account that one or more of your group could suffer altitude sickness. Consider acclimatizing in Arequipa or Ollantaytambo before going to Cuzco. I know a good homestay in Ollanta, with a wonderful lady that only speaks Spanish. How large is your group?
- Good decision to take a connecting flight immediately on arriving in Lima, but try to put your international and national flight into one ticket. This to make the airlines responsible for your connection. Leave Lima for the end of your trip.

Happy travels!
