Just wanted to let you all know that there is in fact twice daily train service between Tacna and Arica, departing Tacna each and every day at 6am and 4:30pm. The trip is about 1hr15min long, and is comfortable with minimal fuss. It costs 15 S./ from Tacna. Keep in mind that there is a two-hour time difference between the two cities. Buen viaje!

Ahh good, does that include the time at Immigration and Customs at both sides? Do they have a joint system yet? I found that half the travel time by bus and/or taxi involved that.

No, time at immigration is about another 15 min on either end, depending where you are in line. They have a look through your bags on both sides of the border. Peruvian immigration takes place in Tacna, and Chilean immigration in Arica.

It's such a cool train and hassle free - did it last year after having crossed the road border numerous times. Because there are only something like 28 passengers or something per trip, the immigration process/waiting is hardly lengthy. Probably one of my most relaxed border crossings to date!
