Preferred airline NY to LIMA

In my experience, the airlines that have the most passenger volume get the worst reviews. Because few people bother to go online and comment that they had a good or acceptable trip. And the more passengers an airline has, the more people who can complain.

That said I've never once had a bad experience flying Avianca. And Spirit is likely to disappoint.

All airlines deserve bad reviews today. And all of them are reasonably reliable. I mean, I have never seen an economy seat that was comfortable... and the occasions where airlines dont provide a service you have paid for are very rare. But I use them anyway, I dont have the budget to fly first class. Just choose the best option regarding price and flight times on the dates you need.
Book directly with the airline if possible - the will treat you better if any issues arise.
Maybe avoid the airlines that are close to bankruptcy.

Unless it's some egregiously bad airline, the reviews are really not something you should be reading at all. They will give you a completely false picture. As above, in economy class my experience all airlines are hit or miss, I've traveled many and could not say one single one that's always good or always bad. Most of them are mediocre, there are a couple 5 star airlines that attempt to give you a better experience but don't always succeed. Like the food on 5 star Qatar really sucks, much worse than 3 star Aeroflot. In fact some of my best flights were on old jets that had much more space and less people on them.
Budget airlines like Spirit etc, will be more crowded and space will be less, and they will not serve you food and you'll have to pay for luggage, other than that just forget the reviews.
