We made it through our 24 hours of travel to arrive at our Cusco hotel and have them ask for a document that was never provided us, on delta or at the Lima airport. I see it mentioned extensively on tripadvisor but not here on lp. I have the April 2016 Peru book and it is not in the index, I read the whole welcome to Peru section too. What do we do now, here in Cusco. The hotel said they could email it to us but who would do that? Can we ask delta to send?? How would passport control know our email?

Thanks!

How did you enter the country without it?

But that aside, you don't really need it until you leave the country again. If you're flying out from Lima, get to the airport early and you can have a new one issued. If you're leaving in another way, you'll probably have to find an immigration office before leaving (or hope the border officials don't care).

Having it emailed sounds weird (and impossible). It's a little piece of paper which the customs officer stamps with the date you enter...

Arrived to Lima 2 days ago. Didn't get my TAM either, and no one in ny hostel in Lima asked about it.

There's a thread on Tripadvisor that says that they're not issuing these TAMs anymore. Don't know if that's true, but to me it seemed that they're not giving then to anyone in the immigration control at the airport, so maybe that's how it is. Maybe your hotel just didn't know about it.

Here is the post in thread referred to above on tripadvisor for the link to the virtual confirmation of TAM that the hotels need so they do not have to charge you the 18% IGV tax:

".........Well, it might be a good idea to get the hotel to confirm the TAM thru your passport number here on the Migraciones virtual consultation:
http://cel.migraciones.gob.pe/ConsultaTAMVirtual/VerificarTAM
It might even be a good idea to copy the virtual confirmation after arrival to show to the hotel.
I arrive in Lima on Monday, so will report back."

So I flew to Peru in June and I guess got what is being referred to as a TAM on this thread but I have a tendency to just throw little pieces of paper in the garbage, so I probably lost it instantly. When I eventually flew out they asked for it and I said I lost it. I had to go to different line (which was a bit slower), and then paid $5 or maybe $10, but it wasn't much.

So... the consequences don't seem very high even if you don't have one and need one, there are lots of dumb travelers like me who throw stuff away. So many tourists visit Peru - perhaps they've changed the whole procedure cause of this. People don't hold onto to loose paper that well, or at least I don't.

Update from the same thread in tripadvisor:

"No problem with the hotel apartments about the 18% IGV tax without the TAM paper yesterday, at my particular accomodation. However, all should be ware off this potential problem for the next few months to ensure that you, unlike some others in the past week, are wrongly charges the 18% for not having a non-issuable TAM card, because they are not given now.

One point you should be aware of when entering into Immigration in Peru. They sometimes arbitrarily issue 30, 60 or 90 days, so be sure to tell them when you are planning to leave BEFORE they stamp you so you have enough time to stay in Peru (and not have to get an extension or pay a small fine per day) before you leave. I told the guy I was leaving in 5 weeks, so he made a point of giving me 60 days, whereas the person I was with only got 30 days, because she did not ask and was only going to leave in a week. "
