Last year when I was in Peru I had a delicious fruit and do not remember the name. I got it on the road to Colca Canyon, the area overlooking the valley, and it was sold by a woman who cut it up into quarters for you. I assume it was grown around there, but perhaps not. I forget what the outside looked like, but the inside was similar in consistency to a kiwi fruit, green (i think) with tiny black seeds. The fruit was also a bit sour and tangy. It was about the size of a lemon.

Does anyone know the name of this fruit and if you can get it in the US? I looked for it in other parts of Peru but never encountered it again.

Actually come to think of it, maybe the inside was reddish. The reason I likened it to a kiwi was the texture and the little black seeds.

I think it's probably granada (granade) although the seeds are not black and not as small as the kiwi's, and the texture is not precisaly a kiwi one but one like the passion fruit, it looks very much like passion fruit.

I might remember the name if I heard it. The outside of the fruit looked like the genre of cactus fruits and the key feature of the inside was the tiny black seeds and the sourness. It was sooo tasty!

Sounds like a Tuna fruit that wasn't quite ripe, once they are ripe they are red and super tasty. I believe in the US they are very similar to Prickly pear fruit.

Could've been a naranjilla, but I only encountered that in Ecuador.

The first (and last) time I tried tuna, I asked my hostess where to spit the seeds - I hate those gritty things - much prefer the crunch of granadilla or maracuya seeds! The Colca Canyon Cholitas only pushed their souvenirs on me - NO mystery fruits! :0(
