Looks like Mardi Grass is around the end of February 2017. I plan to be inching my way North from Lima for about 2 weeks before the start of carnival. Any thoughts on where I should inch my way too for the last week in February?

It was getting close to carnival when we were in Cajamarca. It was too early for the real celebrations but around carnival the city becomes one big water fight. Water balloons are thrown and water pistols are fired and as tourists we were targeted a lot! The first time we were taken completely by surprise but it was a lot of fun. Our last evening in Cajamarca, a Saturday, we saw quite a few marching bands that seemed quite ready for carnival too.

Yes, Cajamarca is the place to be for Carnival, but you better reserve your hotel NOW, as it will be full with Peruvians and international travelers.
