They keeping getting fined (cos of porters treatment) and they seem not care, the last fine was in april 2007.

Just to clarify, I am only talking about their porters and staff treatment which is very poor.
Reports on their actual tourists service (food, tents, equipemnt, etc) is to be made but real tourists not me.

Altitudeman:

As far as you know, which companies do treat their porters well? I'd obviously prefer to trek with a company that treats their staff well.

Thanks.

I said many times i am not here to reconmend agencies but to make them work properly just as they advertize themselves which it doesn't happen yet specially with companies like sas with so many years working on the trail.

I had a friend use SAS a couple of years ago and he highly recommends them. However, I think it is like altitudeman said - their tourist services are done well, but they may not be treating their staff very well.

I used SAS when I hiked the Inca Trail during August, 2005....We had a great time and thought the service was top rate. As for porter treatment-From what I could tell their porters were treated fairly, but I probably didn't pay close enough attention. From a quality of trip/value for money/reliability standpoint, I can attest to them being a solid co.

Feel free to PM me if you have additional ?s.

Cheers!

I just got back, used Peru Treks, I had a great time and their porters seemed well-treated.

SAS is one of the biggest outfits, but does have a repu for being fined and not treating their porters/staff well. I used llama path, had a great time. I talked with all of the staff on my trip (Salkantay, not Inca Trail) at length in spanish and can report that all is well with llama path.

Inca Trail, by definition, is going to be tough on the porters as there are no horses - someone has to carry everything. My recco is to do Salkantay - you will see more of the flora and environment and do so in a very humane way. Also, there is the huge difference between 500 people per day on the IT and about 25 on the Salkantay trail. YMMV
