I am in the planning stages of a trip to Machu Picchu in June. My husband and I will be traveling with our parents (late 60's, early 70's - not in bad shape, but not in great shape either; my mom has a bad knee), my sister, and her 5-year-old son. We won't be doing any trekking other than some light hiking in the area. How many days should we allot for this trip? Also, should we spend a couple of nights in Lima? I have never been to Peru before, and at this point, I don't know much about the country except that I've always wanted to visit Machu Picchu. :) We are not interested in getting off the beaten path unless the path will be easy on 4 senior citizens and a 5 year old. Any suggestions much appreciated! Thank you!
Day 1: Fly into Cusco via Lima
Day 2: Cusco
Day 3: Cusco (Is two days enough to get acclimated to the elevation?)
Day 4: Train to Aguas Calientes
Day 5: Machu Picchu
Day 6: Machu Picchu (Do we need more than 1 day to explore the ruins?)
Day 7: Aguas Calientes to Cusco to Lima, fly out
We could stretch this itinerary to 10 days, but if we're only interested in Cusco/Machu Picchu, is it necessary? While we don't want to rush the trip, by the same token, we don't want to stay longer than we need to. (Since my husband and I will be footing the bill for 4 of us, this trip could get very expensive. lol)
