Hey all, I'm leaving for Lima in a couple days and was planning on taking a bus up to Huaraz from Lima on the 10th. Two days ago there was a massive bus crash on the panamerican highway that seems to be the main route for buses going from Lima to Huaraz, and now the President has "banned buses" on this route due to the danger. I'm wondering how this will affect my travel plans/ if I am correct in thinking that the route from Lima to Huaraz goes along this highway. Let me know if you know anything about the subject or have suggestions!

Thanks!

Assuming your in Lima go and visit one of the depots for the bus companies that travel that route (movil and Cruz del sur both used to). Ask them what's going on and buy your ticket. Even easier is to ask your hostel to find out and buy your ticket. They will add a little commission but saves you going to the bus depot and removes any language barriers.

I'm sure busses still go to Northern Peru. The preseident can't isolate half of Peru !

I have been on that road a number of times because it is the main route north from Lima, high up in the sand dunes with no guard rails and a sheer drop into the ocean below, I always thought those are the risks nobody tells you about but I am sure that there are other roads north, just not a fast as the Panamericana.

There already is a safe, modern new highway that runs parallel to the old route where the bus crashed. The new highway was built in the early 1980's and has since been a toll road for light vehicles, while the heavy vehicles continued using the dangerous old road along the coastal cliffs.
What the president seems to be doing is to (finally...) make the use of the new road mandatory for all traffic...

Regardless on when/how this will be implemented, you can be sure that buses will be going every day. The communication with the north of the country was not obstructed by the accident in any way, it just was a very sad wake-up call for the local authorities.
