Hi
I'm undecided on best place to see wildlife in the amazon but on a limited budget. Will be going early Sept. Have looked at flights into Iquitos and Pucapppa from Lima for around $100. Can anybody give me advise on which of these would be better and about how much I would be expecting to pay for a 3 day tour? Even better, names of reccommended tours. Also, if I booked flights in to one of these places is it easy just to get a tour on arrival or should I prebook?

cheapest jungle tours in south america are in Bolivia, Rurrenabaque. 15 us a day + 80 us for a return flight from la paz...

Thanks for this. Is there lots of wildlife opportunities?? Do you need to prebook flights/tour?

no pro, though it's slightly of topic as it's not actually in peru...
it is quite easy to buy flight tickets just a day or two beforehand. cheapest is going to the military airlines office.
tours should be booked locally.
my girlfriend saw a jaguar - with - cub on this tour, so i'd count that as a wildlife opportunity. also you can arrange a trip to the pampa's from the same town, which is almost guaranteed to show you anaconda, capibara, river dolfins...
I have done a 4-day, 3-night jungle trek from Pucallpa in June of 2004 and it was fantastic. Not only monkeys, crocodiles, parrots and gallinazos (vultures), also stops at local villages, piranhas for breakfast and sleeping in the jungle just under a mosquito net - if you like that kind of adventure. We were 2 women in our 30-ties, one guide and one boatman (to run the old engine of the "bote" or "peke-peke" we travelled in). Here is the guide's name: Miguel Antonio Tang Alcantara, but everyone knows him as "Pituco". He lives in Yarina Cocha, a port on, well, Yarina Cocha, a lake connected to Rio Ucayali (think Motorcycle Diaries...) and located about 3km from Pucallpa. He is a fisherman and "El Presidente del Comite de Botes Motores Turisticos de la Laguna Yarinacocha" and quite knowleadgeable of the jungle. His local phone is 596-494, but you have to speak Spanish. If you go, once you get to Pucallpa, go to travel agency called Amazon World located at Jr.Tarapaca No.980 near Plaza de Armas and talk to Arturo (Arturo Gonzales, gerente comercial). Ask him about Pituco, he can arrange a trip with him. You can e-mail and ask Arturo in advance: amazonwc@hotmail.com or phone 064-57-9694. It was very affordable especially considering the fact, that it was basically just me and my friend (don't remember how much, but we were on a budget and it was reasonable). If you go, tell Pituco that Monika and Lenka recommended - maybe he'll remember. We owe him a lot of thanks for the great time we had. Very local, non-turisty experience and you definitelly don't need to pre-book.

I took two 3 day/2 nite tours out of Iquitos with Cumaceba and also Amazon Rain Forest in January 2007 and can thoroughly recommend both. [MOON-Peru guidebook recommends Cumaceba.] My guide on both tours was named GERLO and he was fantastic - made all the difference!!! Most of the "wildlife" is in so-called "environmental preserves" (poachers' menageries, actually)... Good exposure to indigenous communities! River and rainforest are amazing! Excellent accomodations and food with reasonable prices.
