My wife and myself were planning to take our grand daughter (age 17) on a trip to Peru next summer (2017).
Her parents (our son-in-law) especially does not think it is safe for her. We are well traveled and would like to
go. Anyone with an opinion on this, please comment

Good morning !
I would say that Peru is a safe country to travel to. You will visit the main attractions, so there is no bigger danger than going to New York.
Even more if you are well travelled, you know what you have to be careful about and where to go or not.
I hope you will be able to travel to Peru and enjoy this beautiful country. (By the way, I live in Peru for 2 years already and never had any problem).
All the best,
Martina

our son-in-law.

I guess your son-in-law has never visited Peru. That kind of warning never comes from someone who's actually travelled in the country.
Peru is one of the most popular destinations on the continent. There's no reason to hesitate. Like everywhere, take usual precautions and use common sense.
If you live in the US, like your profile says, as a country the US isn't safer than Peru.
There are dangerous places in Peru like some city suburbs and some drug growing/trafficking remote regions, but tourists don'tgo there !
Its a beautiful country and will be an amazing experience for your granddaughter. We travelled around Peru for a month and we never once felt unsafe.

Thanks to all who replied. I will show all the post to my daughter and son-in-law. Hope this will lead to
a fantastic trip.
Thanks again,

You guys will be perfectly safe. As usual, its just a matter of common sense - but just like you'd act anywhere else in the world. You'll be safe and have a blast. Enjyo!
In my +7 months spent in Peru, I have always been safe and only very rarely felt unsafe, but that was probably more my paranoia.
Use your common sense:
- Don't show to any valuables (jewelry, purses, cellphones,...) in the streets of the big cities.
- Put your purse between your legs in taxis in Lima.
- Take extra care in Lima everywhere except Miraflores and the very centre of Barranco.
- Depending on where your hotel is and what kind of nightly ventures you would like to undertake, take care in Cusco.
As they say in Colombia "no se puede dar Papaya", don't invite people to rob you. With common sense you will be perfectly safe and happy in Perú.
