My friend and I are in Iquitos at the moment and we want to go on a amazon tour in a few days time (around Saturday). We're looking for a 1-3 day tour but are very flexible on time. We are both in our 20s with a good level of fitness so an active tour would be good. However we're on backpackers budgets so not looking for anything too luxurious. Has anyone been on a tour from Iquitos and could recommend a company to organise a tour with?
Another lodge recommended in the book is Otorongo. I've been there twice now in the last 4 years. I spent 5 days there the first time and 4 days there the second time. Anthony (the owner) is an ornithologist from New York and a super nice guy.
For 100$USD a day, you get transport to/from the lodge (100km down river), a private guide and navigator for you and your friend for the entire stay, room/showers at the lodge, food, drink all included. You can literally do whatever you want there - camping in the jungle, hiking, exploring remote tributaries, night hikes, see local villages, animals, plants, fishing, etc etc. You just have to ask and you can do.
You can find their office just off the plaza on the street by la Casa de Fierro towards the river, in the same building as Mad Mick's.
Hi, thanks for the recommendation. We ended up booking with a guy called Walter from our hostel (Flying Dog) and did a three day jungle tour for 200 soles a day. The tour guide was a guy from the jungle called Raul who had an incredible knowledge of both the jungle and the culture and traditions of the people living there. There are at least two Rauls and other tourists were less impressed with there's so ask for the younger one, nickname Wolf. We were picked up from our hostel and taken by speedboat (small and in need of tlc but still fun) to the jungle lodge. Over the three days we did three jungle treks for nature, daytime bugs & animals and nighttime ones. Swimming with pink river dolphins, pirhana fishing, watching the sunrise over the amazon and visiting our guides local community village. Although you can request to do over things such as camping if you wish. From what I could tell a lot of the tours are the same so it's all about finding a knowledgeable guide. My only advice is to brings LOTS of deet!
