Hello,

Next month I will be travelling to Lima International Airport from Brussels. My flight arrives at around 4.30 pm, and my connecting flight to Cuzco does not leave until early next morning. So I have to find a solution to spend the night. As I will be a woman travelling alone, I'm not really keen on going too much around, especially as I don't speek Spanish. (I will meet my boyfriend in Cuzco). I already thought about spending the night at the airport, but I don't know if that's the wisest option. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would not place too much importance on choosing a hotel that is close to the airport. Wherever you stay, you will need a taxi or minibus to travel to and from the airport. Wherever you stay, whether it is Callao ( the airport neighborhood ), San Miguel, Lima Centro, Miraflores, Barranco or anywhere else, the airport is not far away. And neighborhoods other than Callao tend to be safer and more pleasant for informal sightseeing, just taking a short stroll, that sort of thing.

The construction of a hotel in the airport of Lima is beginning.

* The new Costa del Sol Ramada, on the airport premises (actually, right in front of the main airport terminal, to the chagrin of many), is progressing quite quickly and scheduled to be operational sometime in mid-2007; however, as a four-star hotel, most on this board would probably balk at paying the rates they will be charging. Since the hotel is still under construction, it does not yet appear on either the Ramada or Costa del Sol websites.

Thanks. Actually I'm not too keen on taking a taxi, especially since I have read reports on false taxis. I don't mind being in a less nice neighbourhood as I really'd take a room only to sleep, nothing more. If other neighbourhoods are safer, they're worth considering, though. I don't know if it's a good idea to stay at the airport, also because of the luggage, although I think it's possible to store it somewhere or maybe check it in early.

Don't most hotels offer to pick you up at the airport, though?

It sounds like you'd be in the airport for at least 12 hours, that's a long time. If I were you I'd spend the night in a hostel. Somewhere like the Loki or Safe in Lima might be your best bet, they can arrange airport pickup, and you'll at least be able to get a shower and a decent nights sleep. In both of those places you're likely to find other guests who speak English, French, German, so chances are you'll be able to find some people to go out with for dinner or whatever.

Yes, well, I'd arrive at 4.30 pm and have a connecting flight around 6 am the next day (not confirmed yet - still thinking about taking one flight later, but as I understand you can best take the earliest possible flight to Cuzco due to weather conditions and cancellations), so I'd indeed have something like 12 hours to spend. Do you have a web address to the places you suggested?

Here you go:

Safe in Lima

Loki

Mami Panchita This one is closest to the airport.

Personally speaking after such a long flight I really would spend the money to get away from the airport.

It's not about the money - it's about safety and travelling alone as a woman. However the last one might be worth considering - I could even speak my native language there apparently :) .

Try the Hotel Esperanza in Miraflores. I used this hotel when I arrived in Lima and they provided airport pickup. It is moderately priced and represents good value. You can get their website by googling.

I've stayed there (and I'm female if the name isn't clue enough...) it's a nice place, quiet, safe, good hosts. They can help you get safely to and from the airport with trusted taxi drivers.

Having said that Lima is much safer than it's terrible reputation would have you believe.
