Hello and thanks to you all for the invaluable info.

Got a week to kill with daughter before rest of family joins us in SV for 8 days . We are planning on taking a tourist bus to Puno, spending a night there (1), catching the early boat to the islands, doing a night stay (2) on Taquile (unsure if there is a choice betweeen Taquile and Amantani - clarify?) and returning and spending another night in Puno (3). This leaves us another 2 nights before we have to be back in Cusco.

Where can we visit along the way or nearby for these other 2 nights? I guess we can catch a night bus back to Cusco instead of the second night in Puno? Should we visit the Bolivian side of Titicaca? Is there a stop on the way back we might want to spend a night in?

We will be spending some days in Cusco BTW so we don't need more time there.

THanks for your thoughts....

You can take an excursion (2 - 3 hours)to Saquisili ruins from Puno. Another possible excursion by public transport to the different lakeside towns South of Puno, Chucuito, Ilave, Juli ... but Puno is not the nicest town where to stay in Peru. Another possibility is the Llachon peninsula (similar to the islands).

By public boat from the Puno dock, you can visit Isla Amantani and Isla Taquille in one trip. An 8am boat will take you to Amantani, where you can stay for the night, or multiple nights if you want. On the way back to Puno, the boat will stop at Taquille, and you can stay there overnight too, though it's easy to see the island in just a couple hours walking. The boat will give you about 3 hours on Taquille, dropping you off on one side, and picking you up from the other side. Tour agencies in Puno sell the same trip, but stopping in Taquille first.

Good suggestions from #1 poster, and I would add a half day trip to the Sillustani ruins north of Puno is very worthwhile.
