Hey everyone.

I am in the throws of planning my next trip to Lima. I am hoping to find a few places to buy old vinyl LPs. I've had luck in other big Latin American cities and am hoping Lima is likewise. Does anyone have any recommendations for shops or even streets to check out?

Thanks in advance!

Lima is perfect for bying old vinyl LPs, some good places could be:

QUILCA, Jr. Quilca 1275, 2 blocks from Plaza San Martin, also Camana St.

FERIA DE AMAZONAS, at the begining of Abancay Av. by the river Rimac, (very dodgy area but it is worth), like 4 blocks from the congress building.

GALERIAS BRASIL, Av. Brasil 1275, two blocks from Plaza Vea in Jesús María

Good luck and enjoy the experience :o)

It depends on what type of music you're looking for, but as mentioned above, Quilca is a good place to start. There is the "main drag" on the second block, coming from Plaza San Martin. However, keep going and cross Wilson (also called Garcilaso de la Vega) and in the middle of the third block on the right-hand side, there is a single building with a bunch of vendors. They sell a lot of CDs (mostly pirated), but it's also the place I've seen the most vinyl in Lima. The CDs are rare stuff, too, worth checking out because you will probably have a hard time finding any of that on vinyl... Old Peruvian tropicalia from the 70s, Peruvian classic rock from the 60s and 70s, lots of great things you could probably never find outside of Peru! I think there is some vinyl in Galerias Brasil, also mentioned above, but mostly CDs. Worth going and checking out at any rate... From talking with the vendors in the Galerias, I gather that the best place to find old vinyl that hasn't been totally picked through is in the "cachinas", flea markets full of pirated and stolen goods. There is one on or near Av. Venezuela in the center, I think, though I haven't been there, so I don't know how good it is. Also in the cones (north and south of the city), those these are definitely areas to go accompanied by a Peruvian friend. Find a stand in Galerias or on Quilca and start chatting with the middle-aged ex-musician who will invariably be running it and you'll find out whatever you want to know. I've been told that it used to be easier getting old Peruvian rock LPs, etc., just a few years ago for a sol apiece, but then everyone realized that you could sell them in the U.S. or Europe for $100 or more, so they got bought up and are now very hard to find. But anyway, still plenty of piles of vinyl around for hours of hunting! Have fun!

Does anyone know about the Villareal University area in Downtown? It used to be the place for hippies to go when they wanted a LP. I’m afraid I haven’t been around there for a long time, maybe they're still there. It's tru that most of the vendors have found new markets for their merchandise.

Be careful with "cachinas" since the main one is in La Victoria District, a really dangerous place.
