Amazon river longer than Nile: 6,800km

Great news, but won't surprise me if the debate swings back in the other direction before long.......the battle for the longest river has been going on for a while. Two years ago I climbed to the source of the Amazon on Nevado Mismi with 3 friends, a guide from Arequipa, an arrero and his donkeys. It was a six day trek, extremely cold at night and a great place to experience altitude sickness at 18,360 feet. Cole B. Ozbourne

The BBC has not done its homework.
I chuckled when I read: "The Amazon is now said to begin in an ice-covered mountain in southern Peru called Mismi. " This sentence implies that Mismi is a new source for the Amazon.
In fact, Mt Mismi has been cited as the source of the Amazon for many years... in 1971 Loren McIntyre identified it, and the National Geographic confirmed it in the year 2000, click here
