Advice ! Lima Airport - Historical Lima

Yes, the historic center of Lima is perfectly safe during the daytime. There are many thousands of office workers, shops and restaurants open everywhere. After dark it empties out and becomes much less safe with everything closed. But by that time, you'll be in Miraflores. So definitely get your first night's hotel there.

It's well worth it spending the day touring all the churches, monasteries, catacombs.

We also wanted to visit the historic center so we stayed right there. We were looking for a cheap room and stayed at Hotel Espana (55 soles for a double room). The hotel was fine. A bit weird and quirky. It is a mansion and our room had high ceilings, a chandelier and large heavy doors. The place is full of art, sculptures, paintings, all displayed in a disorganised and funny way. We were also awake by 6 am because a bird kept calling. It sounded close and we were trying to figure out what kind of bird... So still half asleep we made our way to the rooftop terrace where we found the birds that woke us: peacocks! But that was not all. It was a bit surreal. We sat on a bench and watched the peacocks... then we noticed the parrots... and then two turtles came walking by.

The hotel is very close to the Plaza de Armas. We felt safe during the day and early evening. This is what we did: Santo Domingo convent. The church of San Agustin. Torre Tagle Palace. The San Pedro church. Changing of the guard (11:45 am). The Plaza de Armas of course. Mercado central. Pedestrian shopping streets. La Merced. Convento de San Francisco.

In the evening we had great street food at Alameda Chabuca Granda behind Santo Domingo and watched the street performers. We walked there and back to the hotel but were not out after 8 pm.

As you arrive late (we arrived even later) it is best to take a taxi to your hotel. You can book a taxi online (Taxidatum for example) or take a taxi like Taxi Green or ask your hotel if they can arrange a taxi. Our hotel sent a taxi and we paid 55 soles.

Regarding taxis - if you happen to have Uber on your phone, it works perfectly well in Lima so you could always use that to move around the city.

Arrived a few days ago, I went with Taxi Green which was $20 USD to the historical district, I would reccomend this if you just want to get to your accommodation hassel free - other than that I have been using uber which seems work out cheaper than taxis :)
