Hello,
My new husband and I will be honeymooning in Ecuador from Dec 18-Jan 12. I had some trouble finding availability on a Galapagos cruise but finally managed to secure a spot for us. The two of us have done a great deal of traveling together and have never booked anything on a trip but after encountering the difficulty securing a cruise I wonder how many other parts of the trip we should plan ahead and reserve.
We'll likely do the basic tourist route, a few days in Quito, Otavalo, the Quilotoa loop, Cotopaxi, Oriente. Considering we'll be traveling during the peak of tourist season, how much trouble will we have securing hotel reservations and tours without any notice? We'll probably be staying in midrange and some budget style accomodations.
Ideally we'd prefer to plan our route as we go but we also don't want to be stuck without a place to stay.
Many thanks for your Ecuador wisdoms.

We booked a trip to Galapagos during this time as well. Our dates are roughly the same. I have had no trouble finding hotels elsewhere in Ecuador - it seems it is only peak season for Galapagos, boats as well as hotels.
Congratulations on your wedding!! What a place to have chosen to honeymoon. Firstly as for booking accommodation I wouldn't worry too much but if you do fancy going to some of the more interesting hostels, such as the one in papallacta, the Black Sheep Inn or some of the travel tour guides like Overland Latin America (OLA) then it is advisable and they do offer the option of booking ahead.
