Hi,
We bought our apartment overlooking Guapulo about three years ago. We did our research on the internet, using the adverts in the Quito newspaper El Comercio. Sunday is the best day for properties.
Good luck.

Also walk around the areas you are thinking you'd like to live in and look out for Se Vende signs on the properties and also the other poster's suggestion about El Comercio. I think I mentioned all this in the PM I sent you. However I don't know whether I mentioned that we bought our property in Colonial Quito from the family of my partner's best friend from childhood so we got it a bit cheaper than normal.

Also, are there 'Good' Maps for Ecuador (maybe laminated) there; Or, should I try to find something before I get there? Thanks - Tom

There is a good series of maps available in most book stores and large pharmacies. They come in book form about 10 inches long by 4 inches wide. Blue, with yellow titles. Various titles from Guia informatica de QUITO (city), Guia Informatica de Pichincha (province), Guia Informatica de Ecuador.... author Nelson Gomez E. Best current road maps available in the country. The Rand McNally of Ecuador.

And regards to your first question, shop around. Everywhere. There is no discipline in the real estate market in Ecuador. Some advertised properties are selling at twice there actual value (owner trying to make a huge profit, however long it takes), to those selling at half market value (owners in need of cash who don't understand market values). Big spread. I shopped around for almost a year before buying property to build home outside Quito. Listings in the El Comercio newspaper probobley the best. Later, property on the beach took me a few years, personally visiting everywhere to find favorite locations and comparing prices.
