We intend to leave Quito on a Wednesday and make our way to the Black Sheep Inn in Chugchilan, after visiting the market in Saquisili on the Thursday morning.

We had looked into staying overnight in Latacunga on the Wednesday night and then the early morning bus to the market, and then onto Chugchilan. But this gives the problem of having to trail round the market for about 4 -5 hours with our big packs and daysacks.

So, the next idea is to stay overnight in Saquisili, which solves the problem of our bags. But there doesn't seem to be much info on accomodation. Have read Lonely Planet and Rough Guide and they mention Hotel San Carlos.

Has anyone stayed in Saquisili, and if so any info would be appreciated?

Also, are we missing something somewhere about our bags issue?

Thanks

Hi, I came to Saquisili from Chugchilan with some people I met in my hostal, and all of us had big bags. I was actually carrying the least because I left almost half in Latacunga when I left for Chugchilan, but my bag was the same size if just lighter, and everyone else had basically everything they were traveling with. Are you concerned about theft or of the unwieldlyness or your bags? It wasn't uncomfortable to wander around the market with baggage IMO and I didn't feel theft was an issue there.

Anyway, if you only plan to visit Chugchilan for a couple days, you could also leave stuff in Latacunga as I did, as you'll be passing through again to move onto any other area.

two solutions that come to mind:

1. Leave your bags in Latacunga and come back to get them 2-3 days later. Pack just what you need for 2 days in your daypack.

2. Ask any business (shop, internet cafe, restaurant) in Saquisili to hold your bags for a couple hours. Depends on whether you're able to politely ask for this in Spanish, and maybe patronize the business (buy softdrinks etc.) before asking so it doesn't seem too odd to them.

When in a similar situation, I just find a friendly (and secure) looking hostal and ask to leave my bag there for a few hours in a locked room. Hostal owners have been happy to oblige and I have been paying $1.00 in Ecuador.
