Greetings!
I am asking on behalf of my daughter who is 22 and who will be setting out late next month for a 6 month backpacking trip to South America with 2 female friends. My daughter has asked me to try and find out more specific information about community tourism projects, with the intention of staying at one place for a few days on her trip...in our family, we have always tried to find such projects when traveling, as we believe in the concept, the value of helping communities earn the proceeds of such tourism and the uniqueness of this concept for cross-cultural experience and learning.
There are some good sites which list hundreds of possibilities, since they are not really sure of what their exact route will be and area it is kind of difficult to process all the different areas and possibilities. She knows she will be traveling inChile, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, possibly Ecuador and possibly Columbia. She is traveling on a budget, wants to actually reside in the community, meet the people...of course safety is very important! She also will not want to organize ahead of time but rather take the information and work it in on the road more or less.
Can you perhaps suggest an approach, make some recommendations and point me in a direction that I can help her find a suitable place for this experience? If you have any first-hand experience, or referrals to a website and other information- would be most appreciated!
Thank-you very much.
